HAPPY SUMMER!

This wasn't the way I had wanted the school year to end :( but I would like to wish everyone a wonderful summer holiday!  I really enjoyed working with all of your children and watching them grow and mature. They should all be proud of their accomplishments, I am!   I also wanted to remind you and your child that they should be able to access Raz Kids all summer long.  This would be an excellent way to maintain and strengthen their reading skills. Memory books will be handed out in September.
Thanks again for a great year! :)
Hopefully your summer will be filled with adventure, good times and lots of sunshine!

June 13 - Friday the 13th!

During Explorations Division 7 made a Newspaper Dowel Structure (we actually had to start over a few times!).  Through this project and our structure unit we had a lot of fun and also learned a lot,,,
- the foundation or base is very important before you try to build it high
- tape is heavy and when we just added more it did not stabilize our structure
- some of the longer dowels were not strong enough and we had to cut them
- we made both posts(vertical) and beams (horizontal) to make our structure stronger
- if we worked together and communicated with each other we were much more successful
- a triangle is the strongest shape - for our newspaper dowel structure we made two triangular prisms as the base
- we also looked at many famous structures in the world both man-made and ones we find in nature e.g.) beaver dam

We worked very hard this week on our Father's Day cards - we hope you like them and treasure what they have written.  The button blankets are something we made with Mrs. Crook.  She taught us that Aboriginal People gave button blankets on special occasions or when someone accomplished or did something important.  The students wanted to give them to their Dads or someone special in their lives.

Today was a very crazy day and with the uncertainty of whether school will be in session or not I have send home most of the students belongings.  We tried to do it in two different bags, one with stuff we are done with for the year and the other one with their pencil boxes and books that we would use if school resumes so the children would need to bring this bag back (hopefully this week!)  I did not send home your child's memory books in hopes that we can finish them up, if not they will get them at the beginning of next year as they will report back to my class anyways.  A BIG thank you to Cole's mom who treated the children with ice cream at the end of the day!

Thank you for your support and kind words through out the year and especially now in this very difficult situation we are all going through.   I have really enjoyed working with your children and am keeping my fingers crossed that we can finish off at least the last week of school together.

June 6

The students have brought home their math books as they were getting very full. Please have your child complete any unfinished or correct any work in the book.  Thanks.  Scholastic is due Wednesday please so that there is enough time for it to come.

We have had a fun week!

On Thursday we had Master Dave Kinney from Sun Hang Do come and do a session with our class.  It was amazing and we learned so much.

Mrs. Murray also brought in Eleanor in for a visit.  We were all so excited to see her and how much she has grown and changed.  She now weighs 16 lbs, her hair has grown and she even rolled over for us.

YOUR TIME has been a big success and it really is amazing how that 15 minutes of their own time seems to settle them and then they are ready to focus and get down to work.

Our big buddies helped us make our title pages for our memory books. We got to make them on their laptops!

Our tall skyscraper newspaper structure collapsed so the next group started again making a stronger larger base.   Today students tried to build it high again but they had a leaning tower of Pisa so decided to build a second triangle base before adding more height to their structure!   There are still two groups that will continue to build on it so next week we will hopefully have our final product!

Grace was our scientist on Tuesday, she made lemonade soda which we all got to sample!

June 3rd

On Tuesday I sent home a whole bunch of duotangs and Exercise Books that we have not used this year.  I sent them home now so that you can put them in a save spot for next year and then you won't have to buy any or just a few next year.  I am apologize for the large quantities that were on the list last year but hopefully it will save you for next school season.

Kaiden discovered a great website Earth Rangers which I have added to our links.  It fits perfectly with our Environment unit.

May 30th!

Can you believe it is already the end of May!
Tall Skyscraper at explorations

Public Library Visit  reminding students of their summer reading program.  Children can sign up by going to any local library.  A great fun program to do over the summer to help them maintain their reading skills they have worked so hard on all year.

Poetry Recital  -   The students all did so well - I was so proud of them and I am sure you were too.  Thanks to all parents who could attend.

For our past explorations students worked on making a bridge out of K'Nex - today a group worked to finish it during free choice Friday, adding the Star Wars ships.  The whole class was very proud of this structure.

We are starting something new on Tuesday.  Each morning except Friday because we have Family Reading.  It is called ......YOUR TIME!!    This is an idea I got from my university course that I wanted to try.  Division 7 is a group of students that often have a hard time settling down in the morning and love to socialize and share things.  'Your Time' will give them that opportunity to do this or sit with a group of friends to play a new card game they had just learned, read a book together or show their peers a craft they had made, etc. Students are welcome to bring in something from home but they are responsible for this and after 15 minutes it will be put away for the day. Other teachers have found this very successful both for social and academic reasons so we are all anxious to experiment with this.

May 23

A short but busy week.

Our Scientists this week were Sarabeth, Jakob and Faizan. Again some very neat experiments.  I am impressed with the students ability now to make hypotheses, good observations and conclusions.

We celebrated both Grace's Birthday (her actual birthday is July 21st) and Amanda's who birthday is today.

Today the students had an opportunity to use all the materials we had used during our structures unit and build whatever structures they wanted.  It was interesting to watch them apply the knowledge they have learned and you could feel they weren't near as frustrated and more willing to try new ideas to make their structures more stable or higher etc.

Today was also our Gallery Walk.  It was really cool to see all the art Fairview students created.  We discussed all the different mediums, techniques and favourites. If you haven't had a chance to do the gallery walk please feel free to come by to take a look (just check in at the office).
After our gallery walk we had a special presentation from Gabriella Morrison.  An artist who explained her life, how she loved art and how she created her many different pieces.  The students were very engaged and asked some great questions.

We have our Poetry Recital next Friday, May 30th at 10:45.  All students were suppose to bring home their poems this weekend to practice.
